EXPANSION PLANNING
Director Katherine Hillier plans for our September start!
BRING YOUR HARDHATS AND EARPLUGS!
The building permit is posted, and Tuesday marks the start of excavation. Despite it all, we will be open through the fall, so do come in and check on the progress. And if you can't get in, keep up on the progress by viewing the on-going expansion on the photo album page. We are preparing for a noisy but exciting autumn!
Expansion Project
Pease Public Library is the most recent chapter in the long history of Plymouth libraries. The first library was created in 1873 by a group of young ladies. In 1878 the Young Ladies were given the Daniel Webster Courthouse, which served as the town's library until 1991 when Pease Public Library opened.
Built entirely from funds donated by Charlotte Pease, Pease Public Library has enjoyed nearly two decades of heavy use and steady growth in programs and services. The need for more space has prompted the Board of Trustees to pursue a steady course of action. Beginning in 2003, a long range planning process was followed by an analysis from a space needs specialist. A building committee, formed in 2008, led to the hiring of Samyn-D'Elia Architects to provide conceptual drawings for an expansion/renovation project.
A recent feasibility study showed strong support for going forward with this project, even during the current period of economic instability. A fundraising project will seek to raise private funds; the town will be asked to fund the balance.
